Consolations
This programme aims to reconnect Brahms' masterpiece, Ein Deutsches Requiem, with German Baroque compositions such as Schütz's Musikalisches Exequien and Bach's Köthener Trauermusik. This connection is guided by a shared vision of a ‘German-style’ requiem, which implies a particular focus on caring for the living, free from excessive religiosity.
These ancient works echo the past and mirror more recent compositions such as those by Brahms and Mendelssohn, all in a new version that captures the tenderness and warmth of ancient timbres, as well as the diversity and liveliness of phrasing inherited from the Baroque masters.
